Charity of the Year 2008

Enshrined in our constitution, is a requirement to assist when possible deserving members, Scottish charities and exceptionally, local charities. Over the years we have made many donations to several charities, mainly local. Whilst every little helps in 2007 it was decided that the council would select one charity each year, named as the President's Charity, to which we would give our full support. This would mean that they would receive a much more significant amount of money at stages throughout the year and therefore be able to make a meaningful difference to the charity and the people it supports.

For 2007/08 the selected charity was Myeloma UK who benefited to the tune of £1416.03 made up as follows:-
Donation from the MDCA £ 500.00
Collection at the AGM £ 185.00
DVD sales by Maureen & Clive Pitt £ 125.00
DVD Sales by David Menzies £ 63.00
Doddington Walk and Barbeque
sponsored by Mike & Elizabeth Leake £ 374.00
Summer Celebration Raffle £ 54.00
St Andrews Night Raffle £ 81.78
Sale of Christmas Cards £ 33.25
Total £ 1416.03

During the year of our support
Myeloma UK managed to get the treatment of this disease funded by the NHS and also in a ground breaking deal the pharmaceutical company promised to refund the cost of the drugs in cases where they did not work! This was of course nothing to do with us but it does show that lobbying by various charities can be very effective and of great benefit to sufferers and their families.

Thank you very much to all who helped raise this terrific sum for your wonderful Scottish generosity,

For the 2008/9 season the charity selected by the council is Erskine, based at Bishopston in Renfrewshire. Erskine is obviously a Scottish charity caring for ex-service men and women. Further information can be found on their website www.erskin.org.uk.
A cheque has already been sent to
Erskine for £130.00 and the council have already earmarked the proceeds of the raffle from the Summer Celebration. Other events will follow during the year.
